Hazardous Communication/HAZWOPER Awareness

HAZWOPER certification is required of workers who have a high risk of chemical exposure, especially those who are employed in specific activities like emergency response, treatment, storage and disposal, contaminated and hazardous waste site clean-up, and uncontrolled hazardous waste site operations.

HAZWOPER stands for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. It is a standard for safety around the handling and of hazardous waste and chemical emergency response operations enacted in 1990 by the Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration.

The HAZWOPER standard is designed to protect the safety of workers who are involved in the early stages of chemical release emergencies and the subsequent clean-up of emergency sites once the situation has been duly stabilized. The same standards cover clean-up of likely chemical contamination from past industrial legacy.

HAZWOPER regulations feature key elements, beginning from site analysis, training, medical surveillance, and PPE or personal protective equipment to engineering controls, air monitoring, informational or awareness programs, decontamination procedures, and emergency response plans. Each of these elements are crucial to ensuring HAZWOPER compliance in uncontrolled sites.
